No not Jimmy Choo’s shoes but Autumn virus news ! At least that’s how it is here in England.
In September the children went back to school after the break. In October the clocks changed bringing dark evenings
In November, December & January it seems as if a good third of the population have a ‘cold’
Sales of tissues, cough linctus, paracetamol and cold cures go through the roof.
Pharmacist shelves are suddenly lined with medication and letters go out to ‘vulnerable’ people to have a flu jab
So imagine this, you are standing in a bus queue and someone next to you sneezes.
Aaaaaaa choo !! Well if you were raised in my family you would have been trained to instantly say “Bless you !”
This phrase derives from the term ‘God bless you ‘, so when you say it you are sending a blessing to the person who sneezed.
I’m not too sure that receiving my two word blessing raises the other person’s immune system effectiveness a great deal
However possibly for that moment the recipient may feel a bit of care and kindness, support and love.
Someone in the world reached out and showed that they had been noticed
Maybe that might bump up their emotional reserves and help them to cope with their running nose.
But what happens if the person beside me sneezes again and I repeat ‘bless you’.
And then they sneeze again and again and every time I say ‘Bless You’
Well if its said the right way, with a tone of kindness and lightness the chance is that eventually the person will laugh
Then I will laugh and probably other people will smile or laugh as well.
Now that really does change the whole dynamic because laughter does effect our whole physiology
The name Hunter Doherty may not be familiar to you but he is a social activist, physician and a clown
Patch Adams (as he is otherwise known) believes that creativity laughter and joy are an integral part of the healing process
He established the Gesundheit Institute.
On their website they state:
The Gesundheit Hospital Project is an experiment in holism with a medical focus, a sociopolitical act that grows out of our deep concern for the quality of people’s lives and health in a society dominated by the values inherent in greed and power
Another physician who promotes laughter medicine is Dr Madan Kataria dubbed the Guru of Giggling.
Through his training courses and youtube channel he has brought laughter games and training to thousands.
So if you have the start of an Autumn cold or man flu then if I can just say Gesundheit !! Bless You !!
Now here is a clip of Laughter Yoga in action
